The very term "silhouette" literally is coined to denote the outline of a form, be it dress, portrait, architecture, even contemporarily finds its effective use in graphic design. The fashion industry is highly in debt for this term. As per the term, when it comes to clothing silhouette most basic thing in any fashion designer's mind about a design - the outline of a dress. 


It is a key term in both fashion and fitness when it comes to defining the outline shape of the body in different angles, undergoes a change in tailoring that fit for fashion usage; aimed to achieve a stunning appearance, either by corsetry, diet, or exercise. This was an advertised term in the early 20th century. Many gyms and fitness studios advertised the prefix "silhouette" to attract customers.


When cinema got transferred from the form of art to industry, the costume designers poured in, destined to milk more money by actualizing the effect achieved by the clothes of different periods, in variety the periods, the silhouette is designed accordingly to match the atmosphere of the era the movie has recreated. 


Silhouette got reflected indirectly to set a trend via movies. Hence, the costumes using silhouette for pirate movies, wild west movies, romance movies, war movies, sci-fi movies, horror movies, thriller movies, comedy movies - collectively affected the human mass to stretch the need and improvisation of silhouettes as designer's property. The desirable silhouette could be influenced by various factors and have various practical applications too for eg., it was used in the field of forensic science.


S-CURVE

The S -curve form of women's physique during the 19th century later got transformed into a straight-fronted corset that started lower on the bustline than the corsets were in an earlier era. The corset allowed the bosom to hang low and unarticulated in front while the hips were pushed backward. In 1951 it was limited to the movement of the legs at the ankles.

Women’s dress seems to have been reduced to two dimensions; hung from the shoulders with little acknowledgment of bosom or hips to brassiere. During the 80s wearing a silhouette represents the triumph of the ideal figure, even a woman of growing age could reach perfection remains embodied by the form of the tall, slender, adolescent girl. Widely used and designed for women with round waists and broad hips as the central part covers the irregularities of body shape very comfortably. Most of the clothes are lightweight in nature, marking them suitable to wear during summer.



Hourglass Silhouette:

Think of a waist tucked tight with elastic grip,  or externally tightened with waistbands, belts, or any fitted waistline. Then, Hourglass Silhouette is your only choice which is perfectly suitable for women having narrow waists. 



Bell Silhouette:

Bell Silhouette is fitted hugging the body tight up to the waist and then flares generously to the hem to make a bell-shaped skirt. Yes. you are imagining it right; a pick of inevitable choice for the most important occasion; wedding dresses. The denser the layers, uniformity in folds of fine fabric makes it more attractive. 



Trail Silhouette: 

Trail Silhouette is a long fabric that is attached to the back of a dress and sweeps the floor as if making a trail. They are mostly worn by brides on their wedding day, also, you might have observed celebrities do a ramp walk on the red carpet during award ceremonies or film festivals.



Trumpet Silhouette:

The tight-fitting up to the lower part of the knees of the Trumpet silhouette may restrict your movement and change your walk like a swan. But, it's definitely attractive that it will bring you the look of a mermaid walking on land.



Strapless Silhouette:

Strapless Silhouette as the name itself reveals a top or silhouette that doesn’t have sleeves or shoulder straps. 



Off-ShoulderSilhouette:

Silhouette having sleeves or straps start below the shoulder level os referred to as Off-Shoulder Silhouette. They are the fashionable silhouette that has the designing age tracked back to the period of the 16th century Renaissance. During the 1970s, hippies have popularized it further, reflected in tops and maxi dresses of revolting middle-aged women.



Asymmetrical Silhouette

Asymmetrical silhouette has a diagonal hemline above knees mostly, providing an effect of the outer covering of thin layered fabric to give a gorgeous look also, by varying the colors, few are designed with cutting at the end of the fabric in asymmetrical lines.



Extreme volume Silhouette

This silhouette comes with oversized jackets, maxi dresses, capes, and wraps. Among all of the other silhouettes, this is the most used outerwear. Highly recommended for women having tall and above average body mass.



Empire silhouette

The silhouette has raised waistline to give an elevated look towards the torso part. Thus, flares out from under the chest line are designed as suitable for a figure with a thick waistline and generally lean in nature.
